About Development Authorities

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has constituted Metropolitan and Urban Development Authorities under the provisions of sub-section (1) of Section 3 of the Andhra Pradesh Metropolitan Region and Urban Development Authorities Act, 2016 (Act No. 5 of 2016).

Metropolitan and Urban Development Authorities in Andhra Pradesh are entities established to oversee and manage urban development within specific regions. These authorities play a crucial role in planning, designing, and implementing infrastructure projects, ensuring sustainable growth, and maintaining urban amenities.

There are a total of 23 Development Authorities in the State of Andhra Pradesh, including APCRDA.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Metropolitan Region and Urban Development Authorities Act (APMRUDA), 2016, the key functions of development authorities include:

  • Preparation of Development Plans: Authorities are tasked with creating comprehensive plans for the development or redevelopment of areas under their jurisdiction. These include master plans, infrastructure development plans, and zoning regulations.
  • Implementation of Development Schemes: They implement various development schemes aimed at improving urban infrastructure and amenities, such as transportation, housing, and public utilities.
  • Regulatory Oversight: Development authorities have the power to enforce building codes, issue development permissions, and regulate land use within their designated areas.
  • Land Acquisition and Management: They can acquire land necessary for development projects and manage land pooling schemes to facilitate organized urban expansion.
  • Collaboration with Government Entities: Development authorities work in coordination with other government departments to ensure that infrastructure projects align with broader state policies and objectives.

These functions enable development authorities to effectively manage urbanization challenges, promote sustainable growth, and enhance living conditions in urban areas throughout Andhra Pradesh.
